Afghan question

dear knitters,

i’ve been working on an afghan made out of manos del uruguay yarn for what seems like ages. (the truth is that i’m kind of sick of knitting it, but i’m really, really close to being done with the big part of it, so i just keep plodding along.) the afghan is made in three strips, like long scarves. i knit up strips one and two and have discovered to my horror that they are not the same length. i think i might be able to stretch out the shorter of the two, but i’m baffled, as these are supposed to be the same length and i tried really, really hard to be careful with the pattern. sooooooooo…

two questions:
how might this have happened?

and,
what can i do about it?

i’m almost done with strip number three and have this awful feeling that its gonna be shorter than strip two.

argh.

any thoughts?
best,
historienne

Your tension may have changed over time, or it’s possible that you miscounted.

I’d take out the bound-off edge of the shorter one and knit it longer, or you could make the first one shorter. Maybe even just take out the bind-off and leave the stitches on waste yarn until you’re ready to seam. Then you’ll know for sure if they are too different and can adjust accordingly.

Taking out the bind off is pretty easy once you get the last stitch picked out. After that it pops right out.

ingrid,

much thanks for the ideas. i think i’m going to finish the last strip and see how long/short it is compared to the other two and then decide what to do about it.

i hope to someday be done with this darn afghan and also hope to like it again in the future.

best spring wednesday to you,
h.
