Advice needed 😊

Hey everyone, I’m started on a knitting pattern for a jacket for a 3-6 month old and I have come across an instruction that I don’t quite understand.

The pattern says…

1st row. K2 * p2, K2, rep from * to end.
2nd row. * P2, K2, rep from * to last 2 STS, P2.
These 2 rows will now be referred to as 2x2 rib.
Work in 2x2 rib for 2 [2:2,5:2,5:3:3]cm, (3/4[3/4:1:1:11/4:11/4]in), ending with a rs row.

By the way where it has 11/4 that’s supposed to be 1 and 1 quarter but I don’t know how to do it on my phone

1st and 2nd rows are fine but I’m confused about the parts in brackets with the colons? I thought it was something to do with the sizing but I don’t know what.

Could someone with a bit more experience explain what it means please?

Thank you!!

Nia

Welcome to KH!
You’re right, the pattern is written for different sizes. The cm numbers are 2[2, 2.5,2.5, 3, 3] with the equivalent number of inches 0.75 [0.75, 1, 1, 1,25, 1.25]. Follow the number for the size that you are making. Usually the pattern has a statement to the effect that the first number is the smallest size with the other sizes in brackets. This particular direction is telling how many cm or inches to work the ribbing.

It helps with so many sizes listed to go through the pattern circling or highlighting the size you’re making.
