Adjusting width on sweater

Hi. Need help. Am knitting sleeveless sweater with cotton yarn. Back is coming out wider than the schematic indicates for size I am knitting. Can I knit the front casting on the next size down number of stitches and decreases, etc. but still keep the length proportional to the backto keep it from being too boxy? Will this make the side seams pull too much to the front? Or can I simply take it in when seaming the back and front together? Thanks for any advice.

My concern would be that the back would poof out or the seams would be too far forward. You could take it in as you seam it if you don’t mind having that heavy a seam inside.
