Adding Stitches

I have not knit in a few years so I am a little rusty. I am making a one piece sweater vest and am doing the neck opening. This is what the pattern says to do:P4 turn;add on 28 stitches loosely. It explains how to add on the stitches:Insert right needle as if to knit, yarn over and pull loop thru. Insert left needle into loop just worked from front to back and slip onto left needle. Repeat for required number of stitches. I just do not get it. I have been practicing on some scrap yarn for 3days now and I am not getting anywhere. Even if I did the first stitch correctly wouldn’t i just be going in the same stitch I just worked to add on the next stitch? I hope somebody out there can help me. My project is at a standstill.

Look at the top of the page at the Basic Techinques tab and click on the cast on. It sounds like you want the cable cast-on or the knitted cast-on. Seeing them is much easier than following the written directions.

You’re not knitting in the same stitch. After you pull the loop through, put it on the left needle and repeat. Each new stitch gets put on the needle and is the one you knit through to make the next new one. Clear as mud? Go watch the video… lol
