Help! I am knitting Jared Flood’s Rock Island Shawl and am halfway through the edging. I just realized that I only knit 2 rows at the very beginning when I should have knit a total of 6! I need to add 4 rows. Can anyone tell me how to add these 4 rows WITHOUT ripping out all my progress?!
Adding rows to beginning without ripping out
The only way to do it so take out the cast on and put the live stitches on the needles and knit down. If that edge is garter just remember to start knitting on the side that looks like purl stitches so it will blend in.
You could just pick up stitches along the CO edge and knit four rows. Things may be slightly tilted or shifted depending on the stitch pattern used, as you will be working in the opposite direction of the original two rows. You will also get a slight seam/bump where the join is.
Do the missing rows serve any purpose, or are they decorative?
If they’re decorative…nobody but you will know, and leaving them off was a design choice. Lay on a crocheted edging later, put on some applied i-cord…whatever, but I wouldn’t rip half a shawl out for two missing rows if they’re not hurting anything.
ETA: Looks like you’re going to put an edging on it anyway, so you can either add the two rows then or just make sure you have enough stitches and go for it.
You can pick out the cast on and add them, or pick up sts in it and knit the extra rows. I’ve seen the shawl, and I don’t think it’s actually that crucial to have them in, so you can really just forget about it and call it a design feature.

Pattern is Row 1, yo, k2tog, knit to end. Row 2 knit all sts. Repeat last 2 rows 2 times. (total 3 repeats of row 1, row 2)
I did the first round of row 1 and row 2.

You could still add the extra rows after you pick up sts for the border. Call the pickup sts row 2, then do row 1 and row 2 once more to give it a similar look.
