About to finish my first knitted project, - a vest. How do I know where/how many stitches to pick up to add a ribbing to the vest?

Where is the ribbing on the vest? All the way around done in one continuous piece, or just for button bands or what? What sort of yarn did you use (mostly to know the weight of yarn)? Is there a link to the pattern or any pictures we could look at? What stitch is the rest of the vest done in and what kind of ribbing do you want?
