Adding on stitches

I’m currently knitting the Guideposts charity sweater and after a certain length, it tells me to add on 20 stitches. I’ve looked everywhere and have no clue how to do this. I called a knitting friend and she explained it over the phone, but it just doesn’t look right. Can someone post a picture or re-explain the process? I’m soooooooooooooo confused!

Use the knitted or cable cast on for that. Instead of starting with a slip knot, you would begin with the first stitch in the row. Knit into that, but instead of slipping the old st off the left needle, put the new stitch on it. You can look at the Cast on video page for a better how to do it.

Here’s some videos

Both videos look just like what my friend was trying to tell me and it just wasn’t sinking in. Thank you so much! I’ll try it and see how it goes. Although, I have to add the stitches to what I’ve already knitted. Make sense?
ETA - while I was experimenting I realized that I won’t be knitting over previous knitting until AFTER I’ve added the stitches! DUH!
