Adding additional yarn to only certain parts

I am knitting this pattern for my daughter but wanted to add some color through the flowers and cables that rise out of them. How do I do that without knitting the colored yarn along with main yarn in between the flowers in the garter stitch?

Edit - the answer to your other question is you would need to use a separate ball of your chosen cable colour for each cable. You could maybe carry the background colour along, though.
