I’m knitting a simple scarf in seed stitch to use up some beautiful bulky sweater yarn (LOPI) left over from a long-ago project. I’m using two colors in alternating stripes. I find that I have more of color A, the beginning and ending stripe, than I thought and would like to use it up and add to the length of the scarf. For the ending stripe I can just keep knitting to desired length. How can I add length to the beginning stripe with a minimal, inconspicuous seam?
Thanks in advance for help.
Rebecca
You could pick up stitches and start knitting in the opposite direction. I’m not sure exactly how that would work with the seed stitch, but it should make a fairly inconspicuous seam.
You can actually cut off the cast on edge, remove the cuttings, and then insert your needle in the live stitch loops and then carry on knitting and bind off again when you’re done. You won’t have a seam this way.
This is what I was hoping for - some way of adding that wouldn’t create a noticeable seam. Does it matter what kind of cast on you did? I did long tail and I’m not even sure I do it correctly, I just know it gets me started. I’ve never cut knitting and it’s just hard to believe it won’t unravel. We’ll see if I have the courage to cut tomorrow!
Are you sure it won’t unravel…?!
Thanks!
Rebecca
No it doesn’t matter what kind of cast on you did, it is helpful to use a smaller needle size when picking up the stitches, and then knitting onto the correct size.
The knitting won’t unravel anymore than going in the other direction and you take out your needles to fix a mistake. Just take your time. And just use the smaller needle, and use a crochet hook if you drop any stitches.
Good luck.
