hi!
i’m making my first pair of socks, and i’m kind of following silver’s tutorial, but i’m using a thinner yarn so i have 26 stitches on each side of each sock…i’m working on the heel, and wondering…in the pattern, you wrap 7 on each side, leaving 8 in the middle. since i’ve got 4 more stitches to work with, right now i’ve got 8 wrapped on each side leaving 10 in the middle. any advice on if that’s good or if i should wrap 9 on each side and leave 8 in the middle? do i want to have more in the middle than on each side? what determines the numbers of wrapped stitches?
First, welcome to the world of sock knitting! I’ve only made one pari of socks, so I’m not much help, but may I suggest you join the ANY SOCK KAL? There’s no time limit and there’s some REALLY helpful people there who can give input and encouratement about sock knitting. If you don’t get your answer here soon, try posting there.
You should be ok with the amount you have (just make sure to write it down so you make the other sock with the same calculations!). After you finish your socks, you can determine if you should adjust in the future.
The general (and it’s really general!) formula is to take 60% of your stitches for your heel and leave 1/3 in the middle. Some people use 50% - it all really depends on how you like your sock to fit and how your foot is shaped.
There is a nice little article hereon figuring out your heel. You can also just Google something like Short Row Heel Formula and come up with more.
