can you needle felt yarn onto a felted something? like pull t apart and needle felt it?

I’ve needle felted onto felted purses before - I used yarn to put names on 2 purses. I’ve not used roving for any of my needle felting. I haven’t done a larger pattern before - just names, but I did pull the yarn apart before felting it. I’ve also just used a strand of yarn without pulling it apart for a finer line.
