So, I’m knitting the SNB1 “under the hoodie” hoodie.
I’m trying to follow the pattern for the little kangaroo pocket thingie in the front. I’ve knit about 7 inches of the front and put all the stitches on a holder. The next instructions read as follows:
"With the RS of your sweater facing you and a separate skein of A at WS of front, pu the center 61 sts by *inserting the RH needle into the center of the next st from front to back, wrapping the yarn as if to k, and pulling the loop through. Rep from * across the center sts to be pu.
Work 13 rows of St st…"
So here’s my problem. My picked up stitches are at the front, on the RS. The skein is BEHIND the fabric, on the WS. How am I supposed to knit??? I can’t just bring the skein to the front, then there will be a little yarn trail around the bottom of the fabric, which is clearly wrong. It doesn’t say to break the yarn and re-attach it at the front, but that’s the only thing I can think of to do. Has anyone made a pocket like this before? Do you have any idea what I’m supposed to do here?
You’re picking up the stitches across, so your working yarn will be at the end of the section you pick up, right? Your pocket will be worked back and forth. When you turn your work around to purl back, you’ll still use that yarn for the rest of the pocket. The yarn you’ve been using for the sweater will be used when you continue working on the rest of the sweater. Does that sound like it makes sense?
I do see what you’re saying, but when I do as the pattern says and pick up the stitches to the front of the piece with the yarn held in back, I can’t turn around and purl because the tail of yarn leading to the skein is hanging off the wrong side. Here are pictures - you can see my picked-up stitches on the front of the work, and the yarn at the back:
I think I picked them up the way the pattern suggested, but now I wonder if I did it wrong somehow?
I didn’t realize that you were a few rows down from the edge. I wonder why they would have you do it there? My only thought is that you’d have to cut the yarn and start knitting on the front.
ecb–you do use a new skein, but if you look at the picture, the pocket is added several rows down from the edge, so there’s no way to bring the yarn from the back to the front to start knitting the pocket. :??
