A "turn" problem (debbie bliss pattern)

I am making a bolero sweater. (It’s a Debbie Bliss pattern…“Molly”) The edging/collar reads:

P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end
working rib as set, cont as follows:
next 2 rows Rib to last 86 sts, turn.
next 2 rows Rib to last 82 sts, turn
etc etc until you get to
next 2 rows Rib to last 64 sts, turn
next row, rib to end
work a futher 7 rows in rib

Well, the neck edging of my sweater is supposed to wider than the sides & back. Well, the right side of my sweater is considerable larger than the left, neck and the back.

What does it mean to work rib as set? And if the pattern says to go to last 86 sts…that does mean the last 86 in that row? Doesn’t it? My sweater definately doesn’t look right. Am I supposed to split up the 86 and have it in the middle of all the stitches? (there are 202 stitches total)

I looked at a photo of the pattern, and think I know what she means, but I need to be sure of where you are in the thing. Can you send me the directions for the row or two before the part you are at?

I think what she wants you to do are short rows, which allow you to knit part way across rows to change the shape of a piece. I recently did a purse using the technique. It’s neat and easy, but I don’t want to give you bad advice!

I started the edging…
With right side facing & size 7 circular needle, beginning at lower right front edge, k 9 sts from holder, pick up and k 35 sts evenly around right front edge to top of lower front shaping, 16 sts along straight edge, 28 sts up right front neck to shoulder, 26 sts from back neck, 28 sts down left front neck, 16 sts along straight edge, and k 35 sts evenly around shaped lower front edge, then k 9 sts from holder. 202 sts

Please help…thanks for the response. It’s giving me hope.

So, you’re doing the finish at the top edge where the collar is?

As I look at the picture, there’s a little ‘swell’ in the middle that makes the collar higher there. So, what she is doing is having you add a few extra rows in that area yet keep all the remaining stitches on the needle so you can blend in those extra rows seamlessly.

So!!

P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end
working rib as set, cont as follows:

next 2 rows Rib to last 86 sts, turn.
next 2 rows Rib to last 82 sts, turn
etc etc until you get to
next 2 rows Rib to last 64 sts, turn
next row, rib to end
work a futher 7 rows in rib

You are going to work your rib until the last 86 stitches in the rib, then turn and go back, every time less 4 stitches to 64. This should make the swell at the neckline. Then you’ll do those extra rows over all the stitches on the needles.

I think. If this is wrong, I apologize!

Can anyone help me - I’ve knitted the entire one piece but looking at it, to start the edging - it looks all wrong, especially the left and right front - it’s not curved at all and I can see that when I pick up stitches the edging will bunch up - are there corrections for this pattern - why did the cast off rows not create rounded front sections? Also the sleeves seem really short…

Thanks- i want to finish this and not abandon the pattern!

p.s. if you have an image of the one piece (before the edging) that would be great!

Happy Sunday evening to all -

I too am making this and stuck at “turn” on the collar edge. Can anyone help w/ further clarification?

Thanks so much!
