o wise community of knitters,
i’m considering yet another project that’s probably too hard for me and need help understanding the pattern.
the item in question is the column of leaves hat, which begins with a provisional cast on to make the band and the band is eventually grafted together. (stitches are later picked up off the band to create the rest of the hat). i’ve watched amy’s video about the provisional cast on and understand it to some extent. i see that she ties the auxillary yarn and the working yarn together and then casts the working yarn around the auxillary yarn, so that the auxillary yarn ends up inside the row of cast on stitches. (i’ve got it up until about this point.)
so…two questions.
if one end of the auxillary yarn is tied to the working yarn at the beginning of the cast on, what happens to the other end? is it just attached to a separate ball of yarn or does it get tied somewhere?
how does one get the auxillary yarn out of the cast on stitches and how do you get those stitches on to a needle so that they may later be grafted?
i hope i’ve explained my questions well enough so that someone can point me in the right direction.
best saturday eve to all,
historienne
