My mother has knitted all her life, and taught many along the way. She is legally blind so I have been printing the patterns large bold type for her. But her latest pattern has[I] KS, PS[/I] in it and the book Leisure Arts does not say what they are? We know what K1, P1 is but this[I] KS, PS[/I] has her stumped. I have searched the net for hours and have not come up with anything. I am her 50 year old caregiver/son please help or point me in the right direction

Hi. I hope you can get this figured out. It might be helpful to know what the pattern is for and maybe a few rows from the pattern including the row where KS and PS occur. Sons like you are unsung heroes.
Thanks GrumpyGramma, the pattern is for a Afghan worked holding two strands of yarn together. This is row 10: K3, P1, K2, P4, K2, P1 *KS, PS, KS, P1, K2, P4, K2,P1, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, K3. Total 116 sts. Like I said it’s the KS, PS that have us stumped. Thanks for taking the time to help. It really is appreciated!
Others here probably have the book, if you give us the name of the book and the name of the pattern it could help. I’m stumped. My only thoughts are to work the strands of yarn as 2 sts and k 1, sl 1, which I seriously doubt, or that maybe it’s a misprint?

It may very well be K5, P5, K5 (not S but five). That would make the repeat add up to 25 stitches and if it’s repeated 4 times that gives you 100 stitches. When you add in the 13 before the repeat and the 3 after you get 116 total.

I’m wondering if a non-knitter typed up the pattern from hand written notes and mis-read K5 and P5 as KS and PS, because replacing ‘S’ with ‘5’ in the instructions does make the stitch count work out. That could also explain why there are no special directions in the book for those instructions.

Leisure Arts Big Book of Quick Knit Afghans #16 Exquisite. Row 9: aslso has it K3, slip 1, P2, K4, P2, slip 1, PS, KS, PS, slip 1 P2, K4, P2, slip 1, repeat from across to last 3 sts, K3. I checked their website and they don’t list any corrections for this book.
Funny how often that happens here. Multiple posts with similar answers ‘crossing in the post’ confused me at first then I realized it takes some time to type and edit and post and someone else is doing the same things at the same time, just a little faster. I like to think I’m beginning to think like a real knitter - I do hope it will happen one day. 
As for you and salmonmac, great minds think alike. 
I wish I’d thought of the S should be a 5. I hope it’s that simple.
Does it give a st count for the row(s)?
Now you’re shown us line 9 of the pattern I’m even more convinced that ‘S’ is a mis-print for ‘5’. Just like on line 10 you have 13 sitiches before the pattern repeat (between the asterisks) and 3 stitches after the pattern repeat. If you subsitute 5 for S in each line you have 25 stitches in both pattern repeats, which go exactly into the 100 remaining stitches your mother will be knitting.

Confession time, :psst: I have terrible hand writing and my 5’s often look like S’s. That’s what made me think of it.
Thank You everyone that is helping us out. The misprint would be why I searched the net for 3 hours and came up with Zip! The killer is she can’t find her old books so I have gotten this and another one several years back. This and the Red Sox is about all she has left.
I have this booklet right here and all those "S"s are actually "5"s. Row 10 says: "K3, P1, K2, P4, K2, P1, *K5, P5, K5, P1, K2, P4, K2, P1; repeat from *across to last 3 sts, K3.
This is thru the whole pattern, K5, P5, K5 or P5, K5, P5.
