8 ply 4 ply

I am going to use some worsted 4 ply yarn for a pattern that calls for worsted 8 ply yarn, My yarn is visibly thinner than the yarn I used last time I did this pattern (which was also 4 ply), In this case, should I use a larger size needle? Pattern calls for 9, yarn label calls for an 8. (go figure) The hat was a bit small last time I made one.

BTW, this craftbits.com site has some really cool and unusual knitting projects, if you’ve never been there.

Thanks

I’d just cast on a few more stitches and use a needle that gives you the fabric you want. There’s no complicated stitch pattern to deal with and the ribbing only needs to be an even number. I might start with 78 or 80 stitches, depending on how tight it was, or even go up to 84 if the new yarn is a lot thinner.

Okay. That was very helpful!!

Thanks, I am going to make that little scrap bird when I get a chance.
