50 skeins of cheap acrylic for $40... a great deal?

Someone in my local newspaper listed 50 skeins of yarn for $40. The yarn belonged to someone who passed away and the family is selling it. It sounds like mainly inexpensive acrylic - red heart, lion brand homespun, and “mainstay” are some of the things the guy read off (I haven’t been out there to see the yarn).

Is $40 a killer deal for 50 skeins of inexpensive acrylic? I didn’t think it seemed like that much of a steal, especially since there aren’t any natural fibers that I know of. But I thought I’d ask here and get opinions.

It’s probably a deal price-wise, but only if you think you’ll use it.

yeah the question for me would be whether or not it smells funky from being in someone else’s house, whether or not it has gotten old and brittle from sitting around for a hundred years, and whether or not i could deal with having that much acrylic in my house. i would need to touch it and see what colors they were and then probably wouldn’t be able to do it because i don’t like working with too many acrylics. :thinking:

Ingrid’s right in that it’s only a good deal if you’ll use it. But even if you only want some of it, it might be worth it. If you want, you could donate the rest to a charity.

Why not buy the yarn and get your knitting group to do some blankets for The Linus Project. The cost of materials is tax deductable as a charitable donation.
