4x4 Ribbing? I'm Lost

Q: What is 4x4 ribbing?

Okay, so I’m not that bad at knitting. I can knit a scarf. Oh, okay, I don’t know how to cast off. But, as they say, one challenge at a time. Or something like that.

Anyways, the pattern - a cowl, by the way - calls for 4x4 ribbing. I know what ribbing is… Though I’ve never done it before. But what does the 4x4 part mean?

Thanks a ton!

1x1 ribbing: k1, p1, repeat as needed.

2x2 ribbing: k2, p2, repeat as needed.

4x4 ribbing: k4, p4, repeat as needed.

That’s all. It’s just a short-hand way of referring to it.

DCM

That how many knit and purl sts in it. To add to what dogcatmom said, there’s also 3x3 or even 2x1 or 3x1 or 3x2 - as seen from the RS. The first number refers the the knit sts.
