2 x 2 rib armhole shaping for set in sleeve

Hello
I’m working without a pattern and have been wondering about keeping a selvedge stitch on the armhole to make seaming easier and neater.

It is a very stretchy, fitted 2 x 2 rib sweater. I would like the edge up the armhole of the body and to the shoulder to be the k2 column, not the p2.
If I do the underarm bind off and armhole shaping right up to a k2 column I think I will lose a stitch of this when I seam the sleeve in. Is that right?
So, should I bind off and shape the armhole up to a single purl stitch instead?
And would it be better/neater/easier to seam if I change this selvedge stitch from purl to knit instead. Therfore ending the row with k2, p2, k3 in order to use the last knit for seaming?
I plan to use mattress stitch when I set in the sleeve whichnis why i tuinknit might be better to cha ge the edge stitch to knit.

I have done the maths for the top myself because I couldn’t find a suitable pattern of what I wanted and I think I’ve done okay so far especially with it being a set in sleeve and yet I’m im stuck on this single stitch!

Thoughts and advice welcome. Thanks.

THe edge stitch either as a knit or purl for the seam will work. It’s your preference as to knit or purl, whichever seems more straightforward for mattress stitch.

Thank you.
I’ll plan it with the edge stitch and see how it looks.
I think I’ll stop and put a life line in under the armhole shaping and then work the sleeves up to the cap, life line that too. Then I can work a few cm of shaping on both and try out the seam.
I might even be able to work the body just around the armhole in short rows like a small swatch area, check the seam join and then pull it out to the lofe line and knit up the rows properly.

Thanks for your help. I’m not quite at this part yet but planning it as I knit the body and revising the plan as I think of things.
It’s only planned to be an undershirt, like a thermal layer for cold months so no one will see any of this but even so its nice to have goals for a certain look and fit to improve my knowledge and skills.

Personally, I find it easier to mattress stitch between two k stitches rather than between a knit and purl. Therefore, I’d change the purl to a knit at the point where it will be seamed, as per your suggestion.

Thanks so much. I have a faint memory of preferring this too but it’s been so long since I seamed something I can’t really remember. I appreciate your input.
