"2,2,2x1 stitches" has me stumped

Hello,

I’m working on a pattern for a doll sweater for my niece. It’s a very cute cable-knit sweater, but the pattern has me stumped.

For the front section, I have worked up from the bottom. I’m now at the point where I need to form the collar and edges where the sleeves will attach.

Front section: Instructions say bind off the center 9 stitches and 2,2,2x1 stitches on both sides. I’m just not confident I understand what this means. Does both sides refer only to the armhole edges? After casting off the middle 9 stitches, I have 19 stitches remaining on each side. Should there be some stitches remaining after binding off the 2, 2, 2x1 binding off as per instructions above?

I haven’t started the sleeves yet, but I’m expecting to run into challenges there too.

Sleeves: On the sleeves, the binding off instructions say bind off on both sides 3, 2, 2, 2, 3x3 and the remaining 15 stitches–how many rows in total should that take? I think I might need a play-by-play (or stitch-by-stitch as the case might be).

Any help anyone can provide would be hugely appreciated. This was supposed to be a late August birthday present. It might be Christmas now but I’m not willing to throw in the towel just yet.

Thanks!
Greg

Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you’re shaping the neck of the sweater. On each side on the neck (the 9 bound off sts), bind off 2sts, then 2sts, then 1st and again 1 stitch. This will gradually slope the neckline. There should be sts left afor the shoulders fter these bind offs. It may be easier to knit each side of the neck separately, finish one and then start the other.

The top of one sleeves is shaped by binging off 3sts on each side, You’ll be binding off at the beginning of the rows on both the right side and the wrong side. It looks like it’ll take 14 rows in total. That adds up correctly with the final 15sts bound off to account for the total of 51sts/

What a gorgeous present.

This is exactly the help I needed. Thank you so much. Just wanted to be sure before jumping in with both feet!
