I’m starting a new pattern and the instructions say to cast on using the long tail technique and then “Starting with a wrong side row, work in 1x1 rib stitch.” Does that mean I just k1, p1 as I would normally or should I start with a p1, k1 row? Thank you!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
If it’s a seamed garment, it’s nice to have that k1 at the edge of the RS row on either side if possible. If that matters, start the WS row with p1. It’ll help us to know the pattern information.
Thank you! It’s the Sophie sweater from Wool and the Gang. It’s knit in pieces and seamed together so sounds like I should start with a knit.
Or I guess maybe it doesn’t matter since it’s an even number of stitches so one edge will be a knit and one will be a purl either way?
You can do it that way. Sometimes I add an extra stitch so that there’s a knit on each end then decrease on the last row of rib. There are decreases in this pattern anyway at the first knit row.
It’s up to you. It’ll work either way.
I’d also recommend starting and ending with a knit on the RS of the work, it’s much easier to seam. As the stitch disappears into the seam it is also an option to work the last purl on the RS as a knit without changing the stitch count. On the RS this would be k1 p1 across to last stitch, k1 (ie replacing last purl with knit, it results in 2 knit stitches together, the last being taken into the seam). When this end is seamed to the other piece, which also stars k1 p1, the result visually is a continuous k1 p1 rib.
On the WS you alter the first stitch of the row so instead of k1 p1 across it becomes p2, k1 p1 to end of row.
