1940s lace pattern

I have a lace pattern that is not working out for me .
I am new to knitting. Can anyone help, please?
As follows 87 stitches as per pattern.
1st row RS p3,[k5,p2] to end
`2nd row k2[p5,k2]to end working k3 on last instead of k2
3rd row p3,k2 together, yo,k1,yo,slip1,k1,pssi,p2,repfromto end .
4th row .as row 2.

The pattern is not adding up stitch wise ,I am doing what it says but end up with different stitches at end of row.

Thanks everyone

Welcome to the forum!
The pattern rows add up including row 3. Does the stitch count go off on row 3 or is it on some of the other rows?
For row 3 p3, * k2 together, yo,k1,yo,slip1,k1,pssi,p2,repfrom * to end
P3 takes 3sts and leaves you with 3sts,
k2 together, yo,k1,yo,slip1,k1,pssi,p2,repfrom takes 7sts and leaves you with 7.

How are you working the yarn overs? They will not use up a stitch. For the yarn over bring the yarn strand to the front between the needles then over the right needle to the back. That’s it. Yarn over complete. In one case the yo is followed by a k1 and in the other a slip, k1, passo.

The stitch counts are correct in the pattern, but Row 3 is not written well. It does not have brackets to indicate the repeat. There should be a bracket after the “p3”. The repeat is written (almost) correctly: k2tog, yo, k1, yo, slip1, k1, psso, p2. But it might not be clear that the stitches I typed in bold are a stitch commonly known as SKP or S1K1PSSO.
So Row 3 should read as follows: p3, [k2tog, yo, k1, yo, SKP, p2]
The SKP stitch is known by many names: SKP (Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over), or S1, K1, PSSO (Slip 1, Knit 1, Pass Slipped Stitch Over), or Sl1K1PSSO. It consists of three different moves to make the stitch – slip 1, knit1, and psso (passing the slipped stitch over).
Here is a video of how to do the SKP stitch.
Here is a video of how to do a YO.

To further clarify: You only repeat the stitches that are inside the brackets – not the ones outside the brackets.
So - fully written out - the pattern would go like this:
Row 1) p3, [k5, p2] x 12
Row 2) k2, [p5, k2] x 11, p5, k3
Row 3) p3, [k2tog, yo, k1, yo, SKP, p2] x 12
Row 4) Same as Row 2

I hope that helps!

Thank you for your helpful reply I will try again :slightly_smiling_face:
I thought it was due to odd number of stitches ,I was in the mindset of 5 stitches per lace pattern but the odd 2 of 87 was throwing pattern out if that makes sense .
Thanks once again.

Thank you . I will try again. I think it might just be that I’ve read in correctly .
Wish me luck

I like to use markers before working repeats like these in lace. It makes sure that you work each repeat correctly and if you make a mistake it’s easier to locate the repeat that is incorrect.
A lifeline is also a life saver for lace.

Sometimes it is helpful to think of K2tog as a right slanting decrease. Then k1s1psso as a left slant decrease. (Assuming English or Continental style knitting).

I really appreciate your time to reply to my dilemma.
I have put my knitting down for now. Pattern is not working for me at all . I am obviously doing something incorrectly, been practicing with spare wool but it simply is not adding up for me. 17132919463912045270053391002586|900x1200

Sometimes it helps to put the thing down and come back some time later with a fresh mind. You’ll get there but for now, a “time-out” is probably worth it.
