15 stitches

I was just wondering, I’m new to knitting, in the guage part of this pattern it says 15 stitches in garter stitch = 4"…do I just need to count the stitches or the rows too? It’s for a one piece baby sweater from lion brand. :??

if the pattern doesn’t say how many rows = 4" then you probably don’t have to count rows/inch.

The sweater pattern is probably written so that you cast on your requred stitches and knit for so many inches before doing the next thing.

thank you, It calls for sz 9 needle, but that doesnt give me 4", guess I’ll try a #10 … dont you think that would make 15 stitches wider?

Using a size 10 needle will make your stitches bigger. Make a swatch that’s 5 inches across–then you can measure the center 4 inches and get a more accurate gauge reading.

T :XX: hanks never thought of doing that. The number 10 worked fine, and I’ve started the project, we’ll see how it goes.

You should make if 4" tall, too. That’s how most patterns have you make the swatches.

thanks 4 your help
