The first and fourth row start in on the second stitch. Do I slip that one or what?
I think you are misinterpreting the chart. It is worked over a four stitch repeat and you have 80 or 88 and both of those are multiples of 4 so they work just right. You just want to start at the right on each row of the chart starting at the bottom. All rows are seen and worked from the right side. You don’t slip any stitches anywhere. The fact that the chart shows uneven rows with stitches sticking out is just to compensate for the increases and decreases, just ignore them and read all rows from the right to left beginning with the first stitch.
Rnd 1: * (P1, YO, P1) all into 1 stitch, P3 together tightly; rep from * around. You should end with a P3 right next to the (P1, YO, P1 ) in one stitch that you began with.
Rnd 2: Purl around.
Rnd 3: *P3 together tightly, (P1, YO, P1) all into the next stitch; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: Purl around.
Repeat these 4 rounds for the pattern.
The charts had me a bit confused too because I was looking at the M1 and the M2 one is worked in the round, and one flat and that confused me. But I believe what I gave above is correct.
