100% Wool Question

Does all wool yarn felt when you wash it? I was wondering how you wash something made out of wool yarn since I’ve heard thats what everyone uses for felted stuff. I’m making a wrap/stole out of Moda Dea yarn & its 100% wool. so wondering if I’ll be able to wash it without it getting all felty looking. Thanks!!

Well, you’d need to look it up somewhere, or if you have the yarn (which I am assuming you do) somewhere on the label will be a fiber content area. It will say what is in it, and what percentages. If it says “Superwash” somewhere on it then no, it will not felt. If it doesn’t say that, I’d handwash in cold to be on the safe side.

I’d look it up for you on www.yarndex.com, but I don’t know what the name of the yarn is.

Hope this helps!!

All wool does have a tendency to felt, but it has to do with using 2 temperatures of water plus agitation, as in a washing machine. You can wash wool by hand, gently squeezing it, or put it into a machine, turn it off and let it soak for a bit, then spinning gently and it should turn out okay. Just keep the wash and rinse water temps the same.

O.K. so I should be fine with hand washing or just soaking in the machine…didn’t know about keeping temps the same too…Thanks Suzeeq.

The label of the yarn usually has symbols which tell you how to wash it and in what temps.

I haven’t met a wool yarn that couldn’t be hand-washed, though some can be gently machine washed. Again the label will tell you.
