the name comes from Lord Raglan, who lost his arm in the Crimean war--Lord Cardigan (who gave us the term cardigan) was also a (general?) in same conflict..
Lord Kitchener (of kitchener/grafted seams) was just a Ltn... (he was a general in Boer war or WWI )
(Florence Nightingale started first nursing service for army in this war, which also gave us the poem, "Into the valley of death road the six hundred" )
strange how 1 war gave us so much (real professional nursing, and several knitting terms.. (but raglan's and cardigans can be made from cloth, too, not just knit!)
