'Turning' is a common question.
Are you perhaps doing the S&C ballband mitt? Whether or not, it's fairly common to arrive at the point of the thumb and to work one side of the mitt before the other. So, yes, you'll do as you thought. Once at the turning point switch hands and continue on that portion of the piece. Most likely you'll eventually rejoin the yarn and work the other half of the sts doing the same process.
