[color=darkblue]I'm a fairly new knitter and was wondering how you know what yarns you can substitute for another in a pattern.
For instance: I'm looking at the Chinese Charm Bag in the Stitch N B*tch Book and it says you need Noro Gemsones (57% rayon/17% acrylic/21% nylon/5% cashmere/ 50g/65 yrds), 6 skeins #8.
US 10 (6mm) 24" circular needle.
Gauge is 12 sts and 18 rows = 4" in St st (k all rnds).
So do I look for any yarn that says guage is 12 sts and uses US 10?
I understand I may here "do a gauge" but with what yarn do I start trying the gauge? Does all yarn say on it gauge is .........?
Am I confused? LOL.
Thanks for the help,
