When a pattern reads "slip first stitch as if to purl, should the yarn be in front? (The rest of the sts are knitted)
Unless the pattern specifically tells you to leave the yarn in the back, I'd move it to the front. Of course, if you prefer one way over the other, then do it the way you prefer.
If you're slipping the first stitch of each row for a nice edge, leave the yarn in front when you slip the stitch, then move it to the back between the needles to knit the next stitch.
