A knit stitch looks like a purl on the other side; the purl looks like a knit on the other side. The difference is which side you're doing and how you make them on that side. If you knit a row when you turn it over it looks like a row of purls, but the front side is V sts. If you want garter, you knit every row and you'll see the Vs in between the purl bumps. If you want stockinette, you knit one row, purl the next row and all the sts are knit on one side and purl on the other.
