Did you cast on correctly? And which method did you use? Some methods of casting on are looser than others.
Also, your tension may too lose, and fixing that just takes some time and practice as you figure out how best to hold the yarn.
If I were you, I would try it again and this time go on to the next row and knit it, too. Any and all practice you can get at knitting (whether it be into a knit stitch or into the cast on row) is good experience.
