Every time you "k1, yfwd, k1, yfwd, k1" into the one stitch you will increase your stitch count by four. Do you have any decreases in this row such as k2tog or ssk?
If you drop the knit stitch from the left needle and purl all five stitches together (k1, yfwd, k1, yfwd, k1) from the previous row, you end up with something that looks like a little berry or a knot.
If the pattern calls for ten repeats of (k1, yfwd, k1, yfwd, k1) in the row and you knit the loop rather than drop it, this could explain the extra ten stitches.
