This is exactly why I just try and make the stuff up myself.
Sometimes if you have an idea for what you want something to look like you can find a woman's pattern for the general design (sweater for example) and modify the stitch counts and shaping for a guy.
Let's face it, there really isn't that much difference between a man's sweater and woman's except for the bust area, colors, and frilly extras. My own sweaters are pretty much made up on the fly but the basic construction is based on reading many, many sweater patterns to understand the basic construction.
As for socks, it's just a matter of color and size. You just calculate the number of stitches needed based on desired diameter and length, using your gauge. The rest would be exactly the same.
