It's not a free pattern, but I think it's well worth the investment. I highly recommend Pop Up Paws from O'K-D Farms and Fibreworks. Contact info on the pattern is 717 428 2457, email Old-Trail-Yarns@worldnet.att.net, but I've had the pattern awhile, so this may be out of date. The designer was Mary O'Keefe-Dockman, and there's a Skacel Collection sticker on the pattern, too.
This is a pattern for fingerless gloves with an optional attached mitten "cap" that can be flipped off or over your fingers. What makes this pattern exceptionally good is 1) the palms are shaped with short rows for perfect fit 2) the directions for left and right hands are reversed for you (this saves a LOT of thinking and double-checking!) 3) the gloves include finger holes 4) they can be made as strictly fingerless gloves or with the mitten cap 5) the directions are very clear and detailed, with lots of choices and suggestions for modifications.
I knit mine on DPNs, but the directions say you can knit flat on straight needles or use circular.
