Jan, I think she had them on waste yarn, so there would be no ball of yarn there when she wanted to knit them.
It's Ok, as Dustinac said, you just start knitting will your yarn as if you had run out of it in the middle of your project. As you are knitting the first round before you join, you will have a little hole once you have joined that you just use the tail end of the yarn to darn it up once you have finished the sleeve. To join, once you have knitted along the stitches, you should have half on one needle, and half on the other, and instead of turning and knitting back like you would on straights, you just keep knitting back along the first stitch you did, and this will join your stitches so you'll be knitting in the round then.
