I'm VERY new to knitting, so please excuse this if it's a silly question. I know the "basics" of knitting (translate: I can knit a scarf ), but what I'm wanting to do is knit a long rectangular shawl with horizontal striping (not verticle). So, to do this, I would need to cast on a LOT of stitches - for a very long starting row. Is there a special kind of needle I should use to do this? Or, is it just impossible to knit a shawl horizontally?
