I'm knitting a cardigan for my first grandbaby (due in under two weeks!) and I have the back of the cardigan done as well as the left front section. I'm working on the right front section now which includes two vertical buttonholes. I've never worked buttonholes before but the pattern seemed easy enough when I purchased it. I've started this right front section over three times now and am really getting frustrated. The buttonholes are within a garter stitch. The pattern calls for:
On next row, work 2 buttonholes in the 12 garter sts as follows: k2, yo, k2tog, k5, yo, k2tog, k1. Work until length is 8".
The pattern at this point it 6" long so the buttonhole pattern carries on for 2". I'm confused by whether I should continue (when working the WS) in the pattern as it is written above starting with k2, yo, k2tog...when I get to that area or to reverse the buttonhole pattern starting with k1, k2tog, yo... to match up with the right side stitches. I have tried the pattern both ways and neither seems to work. Instead of having a continuous vertical opening for the buttonholes I end up with yarn that crisscrosses between the openings and I know that can't be right. I'm looking at ripping out AGAIN. Any information would be appreciated.
