Well, I agree with you that the other person was wrong. But if you think I was trying to support their contention, then you didn't understand what I said.
I'm sorry if my explanation was hard to follow, but I did the best I could without going crazy spending too much time on it. If you read it again, hopefully you will see that I did not say that LT is the same thing as BL plus the first row. Moreover, I did not say that they look the same, nor did I say that they were the same length. They are, in fact, completely different animals.
As I stated before, I did your experiment and several of my own. What I found is that LT makes one knit row with no foundation beneath it. (Whether you want to count this as row 1 is up to you.) BL makes a foundation onto which the first row can be knit. LT does not require this "extra" bit, so it will be shorter lengthwise, as you noted.
