My friend's teenage son loves his gauntlets. They're really just like large cuffs or wide bracelets. I know you said you aren't experienced enough to make a pattern, but this would just involve casting on enough stitches to make something about three inches wide, in whatever yarn/colors you think he'd like, and knitting k1, p1 ribbing until it's long enough to go around his wrists, then seaming the cast-on edge to the bind-off edge. Then make another one!
(Alternatively, you can knit them in the round, casting on enough stitches to encirle the wrist, and knitting for three inches or so, but that might be infinitesimally more difficult, depending on your experience with knitting in the round.)
