Similar situation here - I had begun to crochet again, needing something to do at night besides surf the 'net and watch TV. My 12 year old son is one of those kids that, regardless of any gender association, just really has to try whatever someone else is doing. So if I'm crocheting, he wants to crochet. We tried, but he just wasn't getting it. We were in Michael's one day as I looked for yarn for my next lapghan, and he saw a little Teach Yourself kit for knitting - he begged, I bought, he chose completely wrong yarn for a beginner and again, failed miserably. In trying to figure it out myself so that I could help him, I finally "got" it (after several failed past attempts of my own!). It wasn't immediately pretty, and I almost gave up several times myself, but then I found this site and Amy's awesome videos and was totally hooked.
ETA - DS has tried a couple more times to either knit or crochet, but try as I might, I can't get him to sit down and watch the &^%$ videos, after which, I just *know it would click for him. Grrrr!! Kids...oh, well, he absolutely loves anything I knit for him, and wants everything he sees...except sweaters, because he's a warm-blooded little beastie.
