What ever you make for in a nursing home make it soft, comfortable and washable. If you can, personalize it in someway--things do get lost.
Elderly people are often cold. So jackets and shawls and such are nice, but on the inside they often don't feel "old" so something warm but young feeling.
I suggest- because I'm making them just now- a pir of fetching fingerless gloves from knitty.com. But choose a durable washable yarn that is also soft. So grandma can wear them while being up and doing things or sleeping.
