Yes, there are many charities. I knit 6 x 9 inch rectangles for this charity. It's called HAP which stands for Handmade Afghan Project. They collect these rectangles from knitters and sew 49 of them togethor to make 1 afghan.
This is how they work: Every 2-3 months they get togethor, near and around Maryland, and have "Put-togethor events" where they lay them all out and then volunteers sew them togethor. After they are sewed they deliver them to Military Hospitals in Afghanistan, Germany and other US sites red cross etc...
They give them to wounded officers.
There website is http://www.rectangle6x9.org/
To join them all you have to do is send an email to
Rectangle6x9@comcast.net. Let her know your interested and she will join you up to the listserv. That is how you get all the emails and updates from HAP. They also have a forum that you have access to, to answer any questions you have. She will give you that website address when you contact her.
If your interested...........
The next put togethor event is July 13th. Most of us just keep knitting until it's time to mail them. She doesn't want anything mailed until Mid-May because the addresses for shipping them changes. You will receive that info via the listserve emails when the time comes. When it comes to shipping it's cheaper to send them in 1 package (box) instead of sending them in multiple manilla envelopes.
Hope that helps!
