If I don't have very many stitches to cast on in the middle of something I often use a backward loop (I think that is the same as what you called an E-wrap). But if it is quite a few stitches I think one of the knitted on cast ons work better. I like the cable cast on about the best. It is the same as a regular knitted on cast on, but instead of knitting into the end stitch each time and pulling the loop made, up onto the LH needle, you knit into the space between the first two stitches, right under the needle. If you only have one stitch, you begin by knitting into it and then you have two and start working between them.
